The Biden Department of Health and Human Services is set to receive roughly $100 million for diversity “training” via Congress’s government funding package proposed Thursday.
The “Training for Diversity” appropriations, which were also included in last year’s spending package, would funnel into “centers of excellence,” the Health Careers Opportunity Program, scholarships for disadvantaged students and faculty loan repayment.
Lawmakers are scrambling to pass the 2024 Further Consolidated Appropriations Act before Friday night’s midnight deadline. The House approved the spending package Friday morning, paving the way for the Senate to vote on the measure Friday afternoon or evening.
HHS requested an $8 million increase in funds for “centers of excellence.” It also asked for a $2.5 million raise for the Health Careers Opportunity Program, which aims to help disadvantaged students progress through health profession schools. Both requests were denied.
Approximately $55 million would also channel into scholarships for disadvantaged students. Nursing workforce development programs received a nearly $90 million allotment, with $24 million allocated for personnel diversity.
